[IRCServices Coding] Brief question

Looking through some stuff, I've noticed this:

#ifdef CLEAN_COMPILE
         shutdown_unused = shutdown_unused;
#endif

floating around. Can someone please tell me what the heck the point of 
it is? Curiosity gets the better of me :p
